Site Specific Art Curation

Red Nest by Diane DallasKidd, 2018

The nest and the dining table are objects created for the purpose of nourishing life. Food is the nucleus in both cases. Like chicks in a nest, we gather around a table and eat. In the meantime, we bond with each other and we celebrate life together. We share stories, create ideas, and re-establish ties with one another. Like a nest, the dining table is an incubator. The nest also represents the circle of life, an infinite transfer of energy where death gives new life to another. The red nest created from dyed tree branches, painted threads and wire allude to the red thread of fate whereby souls are forever connected by an invisible thread. The red wire makes way into the city nests, weaving our stories together. With the connection of nest, food and gathering in mind, I decided to play city bird and collect materials from various parts of the city to create nests that were reflective of a particular area or street.

Pillow Fish by Sam Schumacher, 2018

Unique, modern vessels derived from organic, naturally inspired forms. Each piece is hand formed, one at a time. Each consisting with their own living plant, growing throughout the length of the exhibit.

Retail Shop Curation

Developed, designed and curated the Palette Retail Store where customers could purchase merchandise made by the artists in residence and furnishings from the restaurant. The store was available in a both brick and mortar setting as well as online.

Artist Residency Director

James Austin is a passionate blacksmith who employs techniques from medieval times to craft one of a kind objects. For the custom oyster knife, James set out to the true natural source, sand. With the power of a magnet in sand with iron run off, James gathered material he would then smelt in this studio to produce an ingot of metal. From this ingot he would work meticulously to melt and pound out a thin smooth curved knife, which was then placed in a hand carved handle of driftwood foraged from the shores of Northern California.

We also worked with glassblower Sam Schumacher to create handblown glassware and wine decanters. Sam chose to utilize recycled glass for the water vessels, melting down a mix of used glass creates a uniform blue color in each piece. Our guests were then able to purchase these items for themselves through the retail shop.
